Will it work? Hiro | 24/06/2009
I find the merger rather puzzling. If Deacons Australia is pursuing an expansion into Asia, wouldn't a restructure of current alliance with Deacons Hong Kong be a better option? And if Norton Rose wants to expand in Asia, wouldn't it be more pragmatic to engage Deacons Hong Kong in a discussion instead of Deacons Australia?

Deacons Australia is widely recognised to be one of the least profitable of the extended top-six in Australia. But on the other hand, one of the only firms of a digestable size for someone like Nortons and much better quality than others in that same category-- Gadens etc

"Norton Rose said it was attracted to Deacons' strong ties to Asia. "This move will enhance our international reach and in particular create one of the best-resourced legal practices in the Asia-Pacific region"

And because of this, they cut ties with Deacons Hong Kong.... makes perfect sense ;)

I heard today that Deacons HK and Deacons Aus really dislike each other, so that might explain cutting the ties.
